The rubber chicken machine!

I’m not going to explain why you need this. If you don’t know that already you don’t have your priorities right. Well oke here is the deal: do you know how long it takes to poke one of these chickens a whole day? Exactly! A whole day!

I don’t have time for that!

So I made a machine.

What I used to make it:

  • (Vintage) Lathe

  • Drillpress

  • Bandsaw

  • Disk sander

  • Cordless drill

  • 3D Printer

[stating the obvious] The idea behind this machine is that it pokes the chicken, generating the squeaky sound, while you do other, less important things. [/stating the obvious]

On the practical engineer channel we take animal wellbeing very serious so I decided to make a silicone mold of my finger to poke the chicken. As close as the real thing..

My personal goal of the machine was to keep it as simple as possible while still fulfilling its function. Therefore I chose to use a simple rotary to linear motion mechanism to drive the finger. (Parts can be downloaded below)

The frame itself is made from 30 x 15 mm aluminium tubing that I screwed together using the 3D prints I made for the machine feet.

System specs:

  • Magnet mounted chicken

  • 30 squeaks per minute

  • 14 volt

Parts used for the build:

  • Rubber chicken

  • About 50 cm aluminium tubing 30x15x2mm

  • Neodium magnet (20 mm round)

  • A large nut, to stick on the magnet

  • 30 rpm gear motor

  • 2x 624-zz bearings

  • Toggle switch

  • DC power inlet socket
